Subject Intent
We believe learning a language can open doors to the world for children.
This can in turn open up the world to our young linguists, leading to
opportunities and experiences which would otherwise be impossible, and
we want to give our pupils every opportunity in life.
Learning a language can help children to understand the culture,
similarities and differences of another country. It can help them to be
successful in the modern world and may open up a world of personal and
career possibilities.
Our focus language is French which is taught in years 1-6.
The STARMAT Subject Progression Framework (SPF) ensures pupils gain an
understanding across the primary years. All schools follow the SPF
allowing for collaboration across our schools.
It also ensures that teachers can make direct links to previous learning,
building on key knowledge and skills. Coverage of the National Curriculum
is ensured through the SPF.
Subject Implementation
Children at Appleton Roebuck are exposed to French in EY.
Children start informal learning of French in KS1 and take a more
formal approach in Key Stage Two.
As a school we recognise the significance of learning another
language and aim to raise awareness of our multilingual and
multicultural world.
We are giving our children their first step into a world full of
languages and opportunities.
Curriculum Aims
Through learning French, children are able to develop skills involving
speaking, listening and responding, reading and writing.
We aim to:
- Foster an interest in learning other languages.
- Encourage children to develop confidence through ‘having a go’.

Introduce young children to another language in a way that is
enjoyable and fun. - Stimulate and encourage children’s creativity and curiosity about language.

Encourage children to be aware that language has structure and that
the structure differs from one language to another. -
Help the children develop their awareness of cultural differences
and similarities in other countries. - Increase pupils’ speaking and listening skills.

Lay the foundations for future study through the development of
language learning strategies. -
Reinforce and expand their knowledge and understanding of their own
language, including aspects of grammar. - Prepare them for their onward journey to Key Stage 3.
Exposure to Other Languages
In addition to the main MFL of French, children are exposed to the
basics of other languages throughout the variety of subjects and
topics covered.
An example of this is our Lower KS2 Greek topic, where children are
exposed to Greek at an age appropriate level as well as sampling
Greek food and festival experiences.

Subject Impact
Impact of the development of the History skills and knowledge above is
evident in the development of well-rounded individuals at Appleton
Roebuck Primary School.
Children will not only know how to order key historical time periods
and events but also be able to explain how things have changed over time
by demonstrating an understanding of a number of time periods they have
studied.
