History
Subject Intent & Implementation
The intent of History at Appleton Roebuck Primary School is that children gain
a chronologically coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and
that of the wider world, understanding similarities and differences in time periods.
This is primarily implemented through the teaching of History within learning
journeys and through discrete History sessions where there is no natural link
to the learning journey. Teaching follows specific National Curriculum targets,
which are then linked to the agreed learning journey focus for each year group.
The STARMAT Subject Progression Framework (SPF) ensures pupils gain a breadth
and depth of understanding in History across the primary years.
All schools follow the SPF allowing for collaboration across our schools.
It also ensures that teachers can make direct links to previous learning,
building on key knowledge and skills. Coverage of the National Curriculum is
ensured through the SPF.
History @ Appleton Roebuck
History in Reception takes a strong focus on events in the children’s own
experience and their families past and present. Children describe special
times/events and talk about similarities and differences among peers about
families, communities and traditions.
In KS1 History children begin to ask and answer questions about people beyond
their own lifetime and fit these into a chronological framework.
Children use pictures and objects to identify differences in the past and
compare between ways of life in different periods. Children understand some
ways we find out about the past and use sources such as stories to draw
knowledge from.
In LKS2 History children learn about events which extend beyond the local
context and include British and world history.
Children will begin to place events on a chronological framework and describe
connections between the topics studied, understand contrasts and trends over
time and begin to ask and answer historically-valid questions.
They know information about the past can be found out from a range of sources.
In UKS2 History children build a chronologically secure knowledge and
understanding of British, local and world history in the time periods
that they have studied.
They understand similarities and differences in the time periods and understand
that knowledge comes from a wider range of sources. Children discuss historically
valid questions and develop informed responses built upon relevant historical
information.
Key Skills
Children will learn how we use historical sources to construct our
understanding and ideas of the past.
Children will be taught how to ask historical questions to find out more
about the past and structure questions to learn more about change,
cause and consequence.
Key Knowledge
Focus is given at each phase on the development of chronological
understanding starting with ordering events in a lifetime in Reception
to ordering different time periods and historical people studied in KS1 and KS2.
Children learn how to make links to previous history topics covered which will
allow them to make direct historical comparisons and identify how change has
occurred over time.
Children will learn key historical terms and vocabulary in each phase which
will help them describe particular time periods and make historical comparisons.
Subject Impact
Understanding the past and how it shapes the present
The impact of the History curriculum will be evident in the development of
well-rounded individuals at Appleton Roebuck Primary School.
Children will not only know how to order key historical time periods and events
but also be able to explain how things have changed over time by demonstrating
an understanding of a number of time periods they have studied.
