Learning at Appleton Roebuck – A typical lesson structure.
To facilitate the delivery of our curriculum in a consistent way, most lessons at Appleton Roebuck have consistent themes that help to support children in knowing how they learn (pedagogy).
Lesson Structure
- Lesson slides highlight which specific subject is being taught.
- Lessons begin with a recap of prior learning, linking key components to new learning.
- The purpose of the lesson is also shared with all pupils at the beginning.
- Our school values are interwoven into the lesson, encouraging children to reflect on their wider development.
Assessment & Feedback
- We provide feedback usually at the point of learning. This is modelled to all pupils and allows teachers to track and monitor progress.
- Teachers plan strategic and targeted questions to support the assessments they make.
- When misconceptions occur, time is given to appropriately address these, maximising learning.
- Teachers model and demonstrate expectations and intended learning outcomes.
Behaviour & Expectations
- Our behaviour strategy (ladder) is regularly used to praise and provide feedback, supporting appropriate positive behaviours and choices for all pupils.
- Children are provided with presentation guides in the front of all books. This sets high expectations that are adhered to.
Teaching & Learning (Pedagogy)
- Teaching aids support learners in lessons. These include word banks, working walls, computer aids, dictionaries and thesaurus’ etc.
- Where appropriate, children are given opportunities for practical learning exploration and investigation.
- Children usually work in mixed attaining pairs.
- Teachers refer to key vocabulary and introduce new vocabulary at appropriate intervals.
- Collaborative learning approaches (e.g. Kagan) are used to encourage discussion and sharing learning.
- Support colleagues are purposefully deployed to support learning for targeted individuals and groups.
