Subject Position Statement
At Appleton Roebuck, we know PSHE enables our children to become healthy,
independent and responsible members of society.
Our intention is to help them understand how they are developing personally
and socially, and tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that
are part of growing up.
We provide our children at Appleton Roebuck Primary School with opportunities
for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it
means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to
develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing
to school life and the wider community.
The STARMAT Subject Progression Framework (SPF) ensures pupils gain a breadth
and depth of moral, social and cultural issues across the primary years.
All schools follow the SPF allowing for collaboration across our schools.
It also ensures that teachers can make direct links to previous learning,
building on key knowledge and skills. Coverage of the National Curriculum
is ensured through the SPF.
Subject Intent
At Appleton Roebuck Primary School we believe that PSHE enables children
to become healthy, confident, independent and responsible members of society.
We aim to prepare our children for their future through the delivery of a
comprehensive PSHE programme which underpins all that we do.
It is important to us that our children feel happy, safe and content with
their learning journey throughout their years at our school and then feel
equipped with the knowledge and skills to grow into thriving, independent
and respectful citizens.
In today’s modern society this isn’t easy as mental health, climate change
and changes in technology for example are having a huge impact on our young
children and their wellbeing. This needs to be addressed regularly throughout
their lives in school.

Wider Opportunities
It’s important to us that we try to provide rich and varied opportunities
for our children to help them understand how they are developing personally
and socially, and tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that
are part of growing up.
We want to give children an understanding of the rights and responsibilities
that are part of being a good citizen and introduce them to some of the
principles of prudent financial planning and understanding.
We want to teach our children how society is organised and governed and
about rights and responsibilities.
We want them to learn to appreciate what it means to be a positive member
of a diverse multicultural society.
Subject Implementation
Teaching and implementation of the PSHE at Appleton Roebuck Primary School
is based on the National Curriculum and is closely linked to our school values.
Our Subject Progression Framework document outlines the knowledge and
understanding that children will develop throughout each PSHE topic,
for each year group, ensuring a well-structured approach and in-turn progression.
Each question has been mapped out to link with the SPF document.
From Year 2 the children will become ambassadors for their values and act
as role models; celebrating when they see their value being demonstrated.
In EYFS PSED is part of everything that the children do. The children have
a weekly discrete circle time that is based on half termly questions and
subjects that arise from child initiated play.
Each half term we have a group of values to follow and the values are shared
in assembly each week, developing the children’s understanding of that value
and how to live it in their daily life.
Each day the children take part in a class safeguarding discussion.
PSHE in the Learning Environment
At Appleton Roebuck we promote a growth mindset approach where we want all
our children to be challenged in a safe and low threat environment where
they know it’s okay to make mistakes.
Our classrooms are nurturing environments in which we encourage and challenge
our children to think about actions and relationships with others.
This is supported through consistent use of visual aids, working walls as well
as peer and self-marking.
It’s important to us that we celebrate our children’s achievements and
successes and this is shown through weekly assemblies and awards.
We also work with a wide range of professionals to support us in delivering
an enriching curriculum tailored to the needs of our children.
Such projects have included working with the police on e-safety,
stranger danger and anti-bullying.

We want all our children to leave Appleton Roebuck as confident, happy and
healthy individuals who are equipped with the right skills to approach the
modern and ever-changing world that we live in.
